New smartphone displays seem weaker in comparison to older ones. How so?

Few months back I bought Lenovo Vibe p1m. It has it's ups and downs, but the main thing that got me is the touchscreen. It is gorilla glass 3 and I find it very vulnerable. Just about every contact with anything tougher than nail and it leaves a scratch. I used to own old Samsung Wave S8500 and I dropped it multiple times on a rocky road throughout the years but not a single little scratch appeared. I just want to understand why this change in durability? I am amateur concerning this stuff, is it just to make more money by making weak touchscreens or is there a technological reason? Thanks in advance for your answers.
