My skyrim game is so laggy?

I just Got Skyrim on my PC and it is super laggy, I have a Lenovo thinkpad t400 and yes i know it isnt the best laptop for running skyrim but i heard so many people who ran games like gta on crappier laptops so i thought i could run skyrim on mine. It works but its super laggy. I tried everything but i couldnt fix it. I tried pretty much tried everything on the skyrim.pref thingy. Any suggestions on how to fix it.
