I m trying to upgrade my SSD on my laptop, how do I install the operating system on my new drive?

I have a 256 GB lenovo yoga 3 pro with windows 8.1 installed on it. If I order a second 500 GB drive and physically install the drive, will I be able to boot from a USB drive with linux, and then install that onto my new hard drive?
Added (1). so to be clear, I would have to remove the first hard drive before I can install the new one.
