Problem with logging into my laptop?

I have a Lenovo laptop and went to log in and i have to sign in through Microsoft to access my computer. I forgot my password it said I could reset it by going to a link which I did. Went to type in new password and said that it was still incorrect. Reset it a handful of times and no luck. Called Microsoft and they said I'd need to download IOS file on a USB and download it on my laptop. Has anyone heard of this or dealt with this before? Also is there possibly another way to resolve this?
