What does it mean when my android tablet has exploded?

I have an Insignia brand tablet. I took it from the shelf recently ( I had not used it in a few weeks) and I saw that the casing was separated at the sides on top and it appears that some part inside had expanded or exploded.
I have a Lenovo laptop which had a battery inside that appeared to be sealed in some kind of plastic covering and it too seemed to have swelled up as if air had gotten inside, but not to the extent of this Insignia tablet.
Is there a name for this kind of malfunction or occurrence in tablets and laptops? I did not store the items in the bathroom or where there's a lot of humidity.
Anyone knowledgeable enough to know what happened?
