What is this heatsink for?

Hi there, iam such a noob when it comes to motherboards. So do you know what this heatsink is for? Planning to take it off and see what it is at the same time i apply some thermal compund. By the way its a lenovo motherboard (LGA1155) it get hot once i turn my custom gaming pc on.
